Stepwise Guide to Create and Configure a PPTP VPN Connection on Windows Vista

A PPTP based VPN connection is least preferred due to its lower security features as compared to other protocols like OpenVPN and L2TP. However, in case of non availability of other services, PPTP protocol is a better option than an unsecured connection. So, a stepwise guide for the manual setup of a PPTP VPN connection on a windows Vista based system is given below.

  • To begin with the setup process, you need to access the network manager of the windows, which can be accessed by clicking on the ‘Start’ icon and then on the ‘network’ menu item.
  • On the ‘network’ window, click on the ‘network & sharing center’ button provided at the top bar to open the network & sharing center. Here click on the option for ‘setup a new connection’ that is available on the left side of the screen.
  • You will see a list of connection options, from where you need to click on the ‘connect to a workplace’ option and then the ‘next’ button to proceed with the setup process.
  • Now click on the option for ‘VPN’ connection to proceed to the next step of the creation of a new VPN connection.
  • You will get a screen displaying two fields labeled ‘internet address’ and ‘destination name’, where you need to input the server address and a desired name for the connection respectively. The server address is either available in the welcome mail or on the VPN provider’s website.
  • Click on the ‘next’ button after entering the desired values, where you will now be asked to fill in the log in credentials of your VPN service. Enter your VPN ‘username’ and ‘password’ in the respective fields and then click on the ‘connect’ button to proceed with the process.
  • After clicking on the ‘connect’ button, you will see a window displaying the progress of the connection, which you can skip by clicking on the ‘skip’ button, if you wish to establish a connection later on.
  • You will see a window displaying the message ‘You are connected’, after you are connected successfully with the VPN server. Click on the ‘close’ button to proceed with the setup process.
  • Now click on the close icon on the ‘network & sharing window’ to close it and then on the ‘network’ window to close both the windows one by one.
  • After closing all the windows, you will see the ‘set network location’ window, where you should select the ‘public location’ option to enable all the connection privacy and security related settings available to the widows.
  • After this selection, you will see another window displaying the confirmation of the connection as a public connection. Click on the ‘close’ button to close this window.

So, with the above steps, you are now able to create a new PPTP VPN connection on your desktop system running on Windows Vista. Enjoy anonymous surfing through your VPN service and enjoy unrestricted access to several Geo-restricted sites.

To verify your anonymity over the server, you can check your system’s IP address and verify its location on any of the IP lookup sites available.
