Steps to Configure your DD-WRT Router for Accessing OpenVPN Service Through it

With a number of VPN services available, Windows, Mac, Android and Linux are the most commonly supported devices, while DD-WRT routers are the next in the list of support preference. There are many users who tend to use VPN services on their DD-WRT routers but have to configure their router manually, in case of the absence of any dedicated client. To assist those VPN users, a stepwise guide is provided below to help them configure an OpenVPN connection on their DD-WRT router.

Before starting with the process, you need to get the configuration file from your VPN provider for your DD-WRT router model.

  • Go to the web browser of your system and type the address and then the desired log in credentials to access the settings page for your router.
  • After getting access to the control panel of your router, click on the ‘services’ tab option and then click on the ‘VPN’ sub-tab under it.
  • On this page, find the option named ‘Start OpenVPN Client’ and enable it to start using the OpenVPN connection through your router. This will open up a form to be filled with the settings for the VPN service that you are subscribed to.
  • In the field labeled ‘Server IP/Name’, enter the server address of your VPN provider, which you wish to connect to and then enter the value for ‘Port’ provided by your VPN provider as well.
  • Select ‘TUN’ and ‘UDP’ options for Tunnel device and protocol options as available in the form.
  • Now, you need to open the configuration file that you downloaded for your VPN provider. Unzip the folder and open the folder named “ssl” available within, which should contain 4 different files named “ca.crt”, “ta.key”, “client.crt” and “client.key”. You need to copy data from these files to the desired fields on the configuration page.
  • Open the file named “ta.key” using the notepad and then copy the whole content available in it to the field labeled “TLS Auth Key” on the form.
  • Similarly copy the content from “ca.crt”, “client.crt” and “client.key” files and paste them to fields labeled “CA Cert”, “Public Client Cert” and “Private Client Cert” respectively.
  • After entering all the values, click on the “save” button and then “apply settings” to allow the changes take effect.
  • Next, click on the ‘Administration’ tab and then on the ‘Commands’ sub-tab. In the ‘commands’ field, type the value as:
echo “Username Password”> /tmp/openvpncl/user.conf, and then click on ‘Save Startup’ button.
  • Now move to the ‘Management’ sub-tab under the ‘Administration’ tab and then click on the ‘Reboot Router’ at the bottom of the page.
  • This will restart the router and you will connect to the OpenVPN server at the startup.

Thus, with the help of this guide, you are able to establish a connection to the subscribed OpenVPN service through your DD-WRT router. With these settings, you can set your router as a medium for the connection and connect all your devices to the VPN service through the router.
