Guide to Configure the Viscosity Client for an OpenVPN Connection on a Mac OS Based System

Viscosity is a client software to use the OpenVPN connection on a Mac based system, which runs on the Mac version 10.5, Leopard or a higher version Snow Leopard. This client contains all the necessary files and thus, doesn’t need any additional file to be downloaded and supports users having Mac OS Lion also. This software is suggested to those having connectivity issues related to the tunnelblick client software available for connecting to the VPN server. A stepwise guide to connect to the OpenVPN connection using the Viscosity app from Mac OS based system is as given below.

  • To start with the process, you need to download the viscosity app from the internet, which you can get easily from their official website.
  • After finishing the download, move the downloaded app file from the downloads folder to the ‘Applications’ folder.
  • Open the ‘Applications’ folder, double click on the app to open it. You could encounter a pop up displaying some caution, click on the ‘Open’ button to allow the application to run on your system.
  • You will be prompted for the username and password of your system to authenticate the application. Here you need to enter the Mac log in credentials and not the VPN credentials.
  • After this step, you will get an icon on the ‘menu bar’ of your system, displaying that the viscosity app is running. Click on the icon to get the pop-down menu and select the ‘preferences’ option from that menu.
  • You will get the ‘preferences’ window with the ‘connection’ tab highlighted, if any other tab is focused on, click on the ‘connections’ tab to go to it.
  • Click on the ‘plus’ symbol at the bottom of the ‘preferences’ window and select the option ‘import connection’ from it. This is used to search for and import the configuration file of your VPN connection to this application for connection purpose.
  • Download the configuration file from your VPN provider’s website or ask their representatives, if you don’t get it from their website. After clicking on the ‘import connection’ option, you will get a window, where you need to browse to the directory containing the file and click on ‘open’ button, after selecting the file.
  • This step will import your connection file to the ‘preferences’ window, which can be used to establish a connection to the server.
  • Click on the viscosity icon displayed on the menu bar to get the drop down menu again, where you will get an option to connect to the server that you just configured.
  • Click on the ‘connect’ option to establish a connection, which if successful, will change the icon from ‘red’ to ‘green’ indicating a successful VPN connection.

So, after following these steps, you are now able to create an OpenVPN connection using the ‘Viscosity’ application on your Mac OS based system. You can confirm the anonymous connection with the server by verifying your system’s IP address from any IP identification website. To disconnect from the server, you need to click on the viscosity icon on the menu bar and select the ‘disconnect’ option.
