Setting up an L2TP protocol based VPN connection on a windows 8 based system is simple, which can be created manually by following the below mentioned steps.

  • To begin with the creation of a network connection for L2TP based VPN network, you need to access the network pane window. For this, press the ‘windows’ key on your keyboard, where you will get a search box.
  • Type in the search box ‘Virtual Private Network’, after which you will get different options listed below the search box. Click on the ‘settings’ option from the list and then select the option named ‘set up a VPN connection’ from the list of options available on the left side of the screen.
  • You will see a window with different text fields labeled as ‘Internet Address’ and ‘Destination Name’. In the first field, you need to input the VPN provider’s IP address that you can view from the welcome mail, which you got from your VPN provider. The ‘destination name’ can be anything that would make it easy for you to recognize the connection at a later stage. After entering the required details in the fields available, click on the ‘create’ button at the bottom of the screen to create the new network connection.
  • At this step, you are done with the creation of the VPN connection for you and now you need to configure it to be used with your VPN service.
  • After the creation of the network, you will see the name in the available network options. You can get this window from the monitor icon available in the taskbar as well. Select the name of the connection that you just created and right click on it. From the drop down menu displayed, click on the ‘properties’ option to view the connection properties.
  • Move to the security tab and change the value of the ‘type of VPN’ option. For your L2TP connection, you must change its value to ‘L2TP’ option. After this, click on the ‘Allow these protocols’ option to enable it and then check an option named ‘MS-CHAP v2’ from the list below it.
  • Now click on the ‘Advanced Settings’ option, where you need to enter the pre-shared key for your VPN provider and then click on the OK button to proceed.
