Step Wise Instructions for a Manual Setup of L2TP VPN Connection on a Windows XP System

Creating and configuring an L2TP VPN connection on a system based on windows XP operating system is a simple process involving several steps. These steps are dictated below to help you create a connection manually and enjoy the service.

  • To start with the creation of a connection, go to the start menu, click on the ‘settings’ option and then click on the ‘network connections’ option.
  • Click on the ‘create a new connection’ option to start the process to create a connection, which will take you to the welcome screen of the new connection wizard. Click on the ‘next’ button to proceed with the process.
  • Select the ‘network at workplace’ option as the type of the network from the list of available options and click on the ‘next’ button to proceed.
  • Now click on the ‘VPN’ option to select it and then click on the ‘next’ option to proceed to the next step.
  • Specify the name of the connection, which you would be using in the future to recognize this connection, and click on the ‘next’ button.
  • Select the ‘do not dial’ option and then click on the ‘next’ button.  At the next step, you need to enter the IP address of the connection and then click on the ‘next’ button to move to the next step. You can get this IP address from the welcome mail that you have received from the VPN provider after registration.
  • With this step, a new VPN connection is created and you are able to see the screen displaying that the connection has been created. Click on the ‘finish’ button to complete the setup.
  • You will get a shortcut to this connection on the desktop. Open it by double clicking on it to configure the connection for use with the VPN service that you have subscribed to.
  • You will get the connection box, where you should enter the username and password of the VPN service, which you have created the connection for and enable the option to save these credentials for future access.
  • Click on the ‘properties’ button to start with the configuration process.
  • Move to the security tab of ‘properties’ menu, enable the ‘advanced’ option and click on ‘settings’ button. On the ‘settings’ menu, change the value to ‘data encryption’ option to ‘optional encryption’.  Now enable the option ‘allow these protocols’ and check the box for CHAP option. Click on ‘OK’ button to save the changes and click ‘yes’ for any confirmation dialog box that appears.
  • Now move to the ‘networking’ tab and change the ‘type of VPN’ to the ‘L2TP’ option and then move back to the ‘security’ tab and click on the ‘IPSec Settings’ button. Enter the preshared key form the welcome mail here and click ‘OK’ to continue.
  • Click on the ‘OK’ button to save all the changes and then click ‘connect’ to connect to the newly created connection.

So, by following these steps, you can create a VPN connection and configure it to use with an L2TP based VPN service to enjoy anonymous access to the internet services.
