Instructions to Create and Configure a PPTP VPN Connection on an Android 2.x Device

Configuration steps for a PPTP VPN connection on an Android device vary with the OS version. Below given steps guide you to create a PPTP VPN connection on your Android device running on 2.x version series.

  • Start the setup process from the home screen of the device.
  • Tap on the ‘menu’ button and then tap on the ‘settings’ option and then tap on the ‘wireless & network’ option to access the network options.
  • On this menu, look for the VPN related option labeled ‘VPN Settings’ to access the VPN related options.
  • From the VPN settings, tap on the ‘Add VPN’ option to initiate the process for creation of a new VPN connection.
  • On this menu, you will get different protocol options to setup a new connection. Tap on the ‘Add PPTP VPN’ option to create a new PPTP VPN connection on your device.
  • The next screen will prompt you for different VPN options for a new connection, which you must configure according to your VPN provider to gain an access to the services.
  • Enter the IP address of your VPN provider in the ‘Set VPN Server’ field, which you will get from your VPN provider in the welcome mail from your VPN provider. Uncheck the ‘Enable Encryption’ option to use the connection with your desired settings.
  • You can set the name of the connection according to your convenience in the ‘VPN name’ field, so that you can recognize the connection later on.
  • Tap on the ‘DNS search domains’ to open the DNS related settings and enter the IP address according to your VPN provider. You can get all the configuration related information from your VPN provider in the welcome mail or by contacting with the customer support service.
  • Since, the use of MPPE makes the PPTP connection unstable to be used for this version of Android OS, so it is advised to turn off the encryption to use a reliable connection. This reduces your protection level, which can be tackled by switching over to L2TP protocol.
  • After entering all the settings to configure the VPN connection according to your use, tap on the ‘menu’ button and then tap on the ‘save’ option to save all the configuration settings made.
  • The ‘VPN’ menu will show up the name of the VPN connection that you just created, which can be used to connect to your subscribed VPN service.
  • Tap on the name of the connection to initiate the connection process, which will open up an authorization window prompting for log in credentials.
  • Enter the credentials and then tap on the ‘connect’ button to connect to the server. You can also check the ‘remember username’ option to avoid entering the credentials, every time you connect to the server.
  • If the connection is successfully created, a status message saying ‘connected’ will appear under the name of the connection. A key icon will also be displayed on the top bar signifying a successful VPN connection.
